Recent News: AHA Secured $43,738 to Boost Housing Support for Veterans in HUD-VASH Program In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) made a significant announcement: $20 million in funding was made available to support the use of HUD-VASH vouchers, aimed at helping veterans experiencing homelessness secure stable housing. AHA was awarded $43,738 to further its efforts in utilizing HUD-VASH vouchers. These funds can be used for a variety of essential expenses, including security deposits, utility assistance, application fees, holding fees, renter's insurance, owner incentives, and retention payments, all aimed at helping veterans find and maintain housing. This initiative marks an important step in ensuring those who served our country have the support they need to build stable lives.

A decade in the making, the $20 million dollar development sits on 2.3-acres on the Fitzsimons campus, next door to the Veterans Community Living Center. It serves Veterans, 62 years old and older that earn between 30% and 60% of the area median income. Conveniently located within the urban hospital district of North Aurora, residents have access to the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, as well as transit, eateries, and parks. “We are excited to see this project completed and see the first very deserving residents move in,” said Craig A. 𝙇𝙄𝙉𝙆 𝙏𝙊 𝘿𝙊𝙉𝘼𝙏𝙀 𝙄𝙉 𝘽𝙄𝙊 Converted vehicles drive to where families who are low-income might have trouble getting kids to and from a traditional preschool. They eliminate the costs, transportation and other barriers a family might have. YbY’s mobile schools are reaching kids who otherwise would miss out on preschool. They're ready to expand, and we can help. The nonprofit wants to buy another vehicle to convert into a mobile preschool to serve a new neighborhood of students. They work with the Aurora Housing Authority to find the best spots, and the housing authority told us they'd love to have another YbY mobile preschool and said plenty of neighborhoods could use it. This month we started our partnership with Rocky Mountain Welcome Center to start a Kindergarten Prep Class on one of our properties, we are so excited for this opportunity! The Kindergarten Prep program teaches children ages 3 to 5 English language fluency, social emotional skills, and how to be successful in a classroom. These skills allow our students to make the transition to Kindergarten more easily.

Aurora’s Art in Public Places Program and Aurora Housing Authority are working together to commission original work for Liberty View Apartments - AHA's new development for senior Veterans to be completed November 2022. The goal is to activate the space adjacent to the community garden encircled by a walking trail. This work should be celebratory and embody an inclusive, colorful, and inviting space that multigenerational friends, families, and communities will enjoy. The Housing Authority of the City of Aurora (AHA) is celebrating the completion of the rehabilitation of Connections at 6th with a virtual grand opening.  Connections is strategically located at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Potomac Street in Aurora.  The $23 million development benefited from $7.2 million in tax credit equity generated through the 4% Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program.   Connections at 6th demonstrates how the LIHTC program extends beyond the walls of affordable housing; it evolves into tangible communities built upon the connections made between its inhabitants.  LIHTC’s resyndication and rehabilitation allowed for the total transformation of 6th that preserved affordability for all 68 units. Some of these projects have been a financial donation for an Ice Cream Social at First Avenue, fresh Palisade peaches for our residents, Christmas Gifts for our homeless families in Aurora@Home. Most recently, Kiwanis provided $1,000 of school supplies for Aurora@Home and other case management families in need as well as some AHA residents. While every year over the last 6 years Palace Construction has generously provided school supplies to these families, this year, there donation was reduced due to business interruptions due to COVID.

City of Aurora and SECORcares hosted a mobile food pantry at Fletcher Garden on September 10th. The mobile food pantry was free for the residents. The pantry included a box of nonperishable foods including canned foods, juice, pasta, and snacks, a bag of vegetables and fruits including onions, carrots, tomatoes, plums, etc., a pork tenderloin, milk, and varieties of breads and snack boxes. They also included personal hygiene items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and lotion. Each residents received a box of non-perishable box and other food items that they liked. Residents wore masks and practice social distancing during the event.
